Demonetisation: Mamata challenges Modi, says BJP will face music in polls

Addressing the people at Jantar Mantar here, Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress chief who is spearheading the Opposition protest against Modi on the issue, said: "I challenge BJP that this time nobody will support their party, even their own workers will abandon them."

"Our protest will continue and I will go anywhere am asked to go irrespective of political differences," said Banerjee, adding that the ulterior motive of Modi on the issue will be revealed one day.

"If credibility is lost, then everything is lost. It's time, this Govt must go," said Mamata Banerjee.

"This protest isn't about election, govt should understand that whatever they did is affecting normal people: If I was in PMs position I would apologise to the people for the grave crisis that he has caused to the common man."

"As long as I am alive, I will fight for the people," said Banerjee.

She said "India's economy survived the recession due to the 'Lakshmi Jhnapi' that our families keep, Modi govt has targetted that."

Modi Govt is trying to snatch away people's savings, she said.

"Most of industries are on standstill, labour & working class is not getting their daily wages and not able to eat anything," said Mamata Banerjee

"BJP will get a befitting reply in the upcoming elections due to demonetisation," she said.

"You are targeting shops, famlilies and lives of common people. Are you targetting Swiss Banks? NO," asked Banerjee.

Earlier, amid uproarious scenes, a united Opposition on Wednesday forced adjournment in the Rajya Sabha twice demanding the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give an  answer to the hardship caused by the decision to demonetise high-denomination notes.

The uproarious scenes led to the adjournment of the proceedings first till noon and then till 1400 hours.

BSP leader Mayawati also sought  an apology from Modi for speaking outside the House when Parliament is in session, while the Congress demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to go into the "sudden announcement" of demonetisation of 86 per cent of the currency in circulation.

She said by speaking outside, the PM has "insulted" the House and breached its privilege.

"The Prime Minister should be called to the House...he must apologise for speaking outside," the BSP leader said.

Anand Sharma (Cong) said even during financial emergency, the government cannot restrict citizens from accessing their own bank accounts like the way severe restrictions have been imposed on withdrawal from own account after the November 8 decision.

"He has created financial anarchy. Prime Minister must come" and answer questions on hardships caused, he said.

Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) said Modi was violating the Constitution  by not answering questions in Parliament.

Led by the Congress, the Opposition members trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans, forcing Deputy Chairman P J Kurien to adjourn the proceedings till 1200 hours.

Soon after the House met at noon, the Opposition again created an uproar, refusing to allow the  Question Hour to be taken up.
