Kanpur, Nov 21 (IBNS) : Rescue workers on Monday called off the operation for finding survivors in the wreckage of the Indore-Patna Express, which jumped off rails near Kanpur on Sunday, killing 143 passengers in their sleep, media reports said.

According to reports, the decision not to continue the operation was taken after it was clear on Monday afternoon that there was almost no chance to find anyone alive in the crushed coaches.

Personnel of the army, police and the National Disaster Management Force were carrying out the search operation making overnight efforts.

With more bodies being extricated from inside the mangled coaches, the the toll in the accident finally rose to 143 on Monday morning.

Fourteen coaches were thrown off track at Pukhrayan, about 60 km off  Kanpur, when the train, running at a speed of 110 kmph, was midway in its 27-hour journey between Indore and Patna.

While the cause of the accident is being investigated, officials say a fault in the tracks could be the reason.
