Two women buried alive in Central Assam, branding them as witches

Guwahati, Nov 1 (IBNS) : Two women were buried alive by three brothers in Central Assam’s Nagaon district branded them as witches.

Police on Monday recovered the bodies of 60-year old Sagu Gaur and 48-year old Salmi Gaur from Naharbari area under Samaguri police station near Barhampur in the Central Assam district.

The victims were pushed into a village well by three brothers and buried alive them by filling up earth.

Police arrested two accused persons identified as Basu Gaur and Sanu Gaur and another Kumar Sanu Gaur is still absconding.

A top police official said that, the two women were killed by the persons branded them as witches.

“A local tantric said that the women were used black magic in the village since long time, resulting the villagers fell ill,” an accused Basu Gaur told to local channels.

Over 150 people witch hunting incidents reported in the North Eastern Indian state in past a decade.

In last year, Assam assembly had unanimously passed the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Bill, 2015 to prevent the rising witch hunting incidents in the state.
