Kolkata, Sept 19 (IBNS): In a major development in the political scenario of West Bengal, a large number of senior Congress leaders, including Manas Ranjan Bhunia and Md. Sohrab, joined the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Monday.

Besides Manas Bhunia and Md. Sohrab, West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC)'s General Secretary Kanak Debnath and several other leaders and secretaries of state's prime opposition party joined the TMC.

TMC's Secretary General Partha Chatterjee said, "Nobody accepted the alliance between CPI-M and Congress in last assembly election and one after another Congress leaders are joining our party to become a part of Mamata Banerjee's grand development process and success."

"Except Adhir Chowdhury and Abdul Mannan, none is there in the WBPCC, I guess," Chatterjee added.

After joining the TMC, Manas Bhunia told IBNS, "Congress in West Bengal, under the leadership of Adhir Chowdhury and Abdul Mannan, is not the original Congress, it's the ghost of Congress."

"I've joined the actual Congress today, which is being led by Mamata Banerjee," Manas Bhunia futher said.

Earlier on Sunday, 17 councilors of Murshidabad district's Beharampur Municipality joined the ruling party, gifting majority to TMC in the municipality.

TMC leaders claimed that, the party will take over another Congress-ruled municipality in Murshidabad- Kandi Municipality- very soon, as several Congress councilors would join the party.
