Kolkata, Sept 15 (IBNS): A 18-year-old air conditioner technician fell to his death from the terrace of a six-storey residential building, after being chased by two Alsatians, in Kolkata's Thakurpur area on Tuesday night, reports said.

According to reports, second year student of Vidyanagar College, Gaurav Purkait and his uncle- Tarun Purkait- went to install an air conditioning machine in an apartment at Majipara area under Thakurpukur Police Station limits in south Kolkata.

When they were installing the outdoor unit on the terrace of Diptikana apartment, one resident of the apartment- Sumit Bhattacharya- went to the rooftop with his pet dogs and allegedly removed their collars.

One of the Alsatians chased Gaurav and he suddenly fell from the terrace, after losing his balance.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where Gaurav was declared brought dead.

Police on Wednesday arrested dogs' owner Sumit Bhattacharya and another resident Tapas Ghoshal, whose air conditioning machine was being installed, and charged them under IPC sections 304 (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 374 (Unlawful compulsory labour) respectively.

However, they were granted bail from a local court later.

One of the inhabitants of the residential complex- Dipti Kana- told IBNS, "Two technicians were fixing Tapas Ghoshal's air conditioning machine since 4 pm. and when they were about to wind up their assignment on the terrace, Sumit Bhattacharya went to pay a visit there with his pet Alsatian dogs."

"Those dogs were allegedly let loose and were perhaps wandering freely when the youth- Gaurav- got scared and requested to leash the dogs away from their area, until they finish their work,” he added.

“Without giving importance to his request, Sumit Bhattacharya assured that his trained dogs never bite strangers. Soon after one of the dogs jumped and rested his paws on the panic stricken fellow and in an attempt to save himself, Gaurav jumped from the 6th floor of the building,” he further said.

Meanwhile, wife of Tapas Kumar Ghoshal told IBNS,”The incident took place at around 10 pm. and after that my husband took Gaurav to a nearby hospital, but since it was too late."

"We called the police immediately. They arrested Sumit Bhattacharya and my husband later," she said.
