West Bengal to be called Bangla: State assembly passes resolution
Kolkata, Aug 29 (IBNS): The West Bengal Assembly on Monday gave its nod to rename the state to 'Bangla' as its Bengali name and 'Bengali' in English, according to media reports.
Led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the proposal was doing the rounds over the past few months.
In Hindi, the state will be referred to as 'Bangal', as is common practice.
The names have to be approved by the Union government to take effect.
