Imphal, Aug 9 (IBNS) : After being on an epic fast for 16 years demanding withdrawal of AFSPA from Manipur, Irom Chanu Sharmila is set to end it on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old 'Iron lady'  has been force-fed through a nasal tube for years at a prison hospital in Imphal.

She will break her fast at a court, reports said.

Sharmila began her fast in 2000 after the death of ten  people in firing by security forces. She represented a vast majority of Manipur people, who had been demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Protection Act (AFSPA) that gives sweeping power to the army.

On July 26,  she announced that she will end her fast and join politics- a move many interpret as a shift in her strategy to fight for the causes she has espoused..

She has said that she will contest elections as an independent candidate.
