Sonia calls for change of baton ; Rahul soon to become Cong President ?

Chandigarh, June 1 (IBNS) In a message of imminent change of guard in the Congress, party President Sonia Gandhi has said that it's time for "the baton to be handed over to someone else" as media reports say Rahul Gandhi will soon take over his mother's mantle.

NDTV has quoted Congress leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh as saying that Rahul Gandhi will soon be promoted to party President.

After the Congress was trounced in last month's assembly elections in four states, senior Congress leaders voiced in favour of a thorough organisational shake up with ones like Digvijay Singh advocating for a "surgery".

Sonia Gandhi, 69, has been Congress President since April 1998.  Her son,Rahul Gandhi, 45, is the party's No. 2.

Rahul Gandhi's  campaign for the general election in 2014 fetched the party only  44 seats - its worst-ever result. Since then, the Congress has lost a series of elections. Still party leaders feel it's time for him to formally take charge infusing a new vibe in the party.

Congress is expected to hold a 'chintan shivir' (brainstorming session) in June. The session is being held at a time when Rahul's elevation to the party chief's post is being talked about.

The crowning of Rahul Gandhi will herald a generation shift in the Congress and end a long running speculation in Indian politics which has been in the air  since he became Congress vice president in 2013.
