President seeks govt's clarification on postponement of NEET
New Delhi, May 22 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee has sought clarification from the central government before signing the ordinance which seeks to postpone the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), media reports said.
Mukherjee has asked Health Minister JP Nadda to meet him in person and explain the reason for the postponement.
The Union Cabinet on Friday issued an ordinance to postpone the holding of the exam by a year.
The government is awaiting the President's approval for the ordinance.
In April, the Supreme Court had ruled that students seeking admission in medical and dental colleges in India have to sit for only one entrance examination, NEET.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the SC against the promulgation of the ordinance.
Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, had written to PM Modi not to bring in the ordinance. He had tweeted, "I sincerely urge Modi ji not to bring any ordinance to overturn SC order on NEET."
But a few other states were in favour of postponing the NEET citing students were not prepared for the NEET as the main reason.
According to media reports, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that the government does not differ from the SC's views but is consulting over the implementation procedures.
Six lakh students appeared for the first phase of NEET on May 1, media reported. The second phase is on July 24.
