Kolkata witnesses two-day taxi strike

Kolkata, Mar 14 (IBNS): The city life has been party disrupted due to the two-day long taxi strike beginning in Kolkata on the week's first working day.

Demanding hike in fare and protesting against the alleged persecution by traffic police, the Kolkata Taxi Operators' Union and West Bengal Taxi Operators' Co-ordination Committee have called the  strike jointly on Monday and Tuesday.

Few labours' organizations, including CITU, AITUC, INTUC and AICCTU, have supported the strike.

Very  few taxis are being found since morning at several important places in Kolkata, including Howrah Station, Sealdah Station, Kolkata Station and Esplanade, and commuters are suffering a lot.

Leaders of these organizations have said the strike will be withdrawn  if the state Transport department issues them an written assurance to fulfill their demands.
