Union Minister Bangaru Dattatreya booked after Hyderabad Dalit student's suicide

Hyderabad, Jan 18 (IBNS) Police on Monday filed an FIR against Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya after students alleged that he had written to the HRD ministry demanding the suspension of five research scholars studying in Hyderabad Central University-a move that reportedly resulted in the suicide of Vermula Rohit.

Trouble began when the body of  Rohit, a Dalit PhD scholar, was found hanging at the Central University’s hostel room in the campus on Sunday. The body was sent for post mortem amid protests from students on Monday  morning.

A group of students sat with his body all night, demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor. Protests intensified  after a police team took away the body for post mortem and arrested eight students.

Education Minister Smriti Irani has sent a two-member team to inquire into the death.

Rohit was among the five research scholars who were suspended by Hyderabad Central University (HCU) in August last year and also one of the accused in the case of assault on a student leader, Anand had said.

The suspension was revoked later. Further investigation in the case is on.

All five research scholars belonged to Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) and they were protesting and with other unions like SFI, Dalit Students Union and National Students Association were on a relay hunger strike.

Rohit's friends said he was shattered when the Vice Chancellor denied him an appointment though he was out in the open for days living in a tent after they were banned in the varsity hostel.

Media reports in NDTV said while Rohit was cleared in the case of assault after a probe, union minister Bandaru Dattatreya had written to Education Minister Smriti Irani for action holding that the university remained a mute spectator to the attack on a student and how it has "become a den of casteist, extremist and anti-national politics."

In December, they were barred from the hostel and other common areas.

Meanwhile, the university authorities in a communique said :"The University shall remain closed on 18th January, 2016 due to unforeseen circumstances".

Meanwhile, some student unions have called for an educational institutions bandhon Monday.
