Srinagar, Jan 9 (IBNS): Days after Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed passed away in New Delhi, the state was placed under Governor's Rule on Saturday.

After receiving concurrence from President Pranab Mukherjee, Governor N.N. Vohra issued a Proclamation to impose Governor’s Rule in the state.

“Sudden passing away of Chief Minister Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on 7th January 2016, the process to form government had commenced and intimations were still awaited about the respective positions of PDP and BJP,” the Raj Bhavan spokesperson said.

"Considering the likelihood of some more time being taken before government can be formed, with the approval of the President of India, Governor’s Rule has been imposed in the State with effect from 8th January, 2016, under Section 92(1) of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir," the spokesman added.

The Governor's rule has been imposed in the state for the second time in past one year.

Earlier, on Jan 9, 2015 such rule was imposed in the state after assembly polls of 2014 threw a hung verdict.

After death of Mufti Muhammad Syed on Thursday,  it became clear that Governor's rule is likely to be imposed in the state as PDP president Mehbooba Mufti is insisting on not taking oath as the new chief minister before the end of four-day mourning for her father.
