Chennai, Nov 16 (IBNS) As incessant rains continued pound Tamil Nadu, the death toll on Monday shot to 71 with the fury spreading over to other parts of southern India, reports said.

Popular places across Chennai, like the Marina Beach, remained flooded after the incessant rainfall, recorded at  24 cm till 5 30 am on Monday morning.

The met office predicted more rains in the Tamil Nadu capital and other coastal areas which could add more woes to the people already hit by the calamity.

t said in a bulletin  that the well-marked low pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal adjoining Sri Lanka persisted and "it is likely to move west-northwestwards towards Tamil Nadu coast and would concentrate into a Depression during next 24 hours."

Under its influence, more rains were expected in the next 24 hours, the Regional Meteorological Department said.

While schools and colleges remain shut, suburban train services have been disrupted as well. The state government has evacuated people living in low lying areas.

Met officials had earlier said that a low pressure trough had formed in the south east Bay of Bengal and it could intensify into a depression.
