Truckers begin indefinite nationwide strike

India Blooms News Service | | 01 Oct 2015, 02:43 pm
New Delhi, Oct 1 (IBNS) Truckers across the country on Thursday went on an indefinite strike in protest against the present toll system.
Their move came after  talks between the government and AIMTC delegation flopped with the truck operators insisting that the   offer of electronic-toll system by December was not practical.

However, essential commodities like milk, vegetables and medicine have been kept off the purview of the strike.

AIMTC demands  scrapping of toll system, which it says is a "tool of harassment" wants one-time payment of taxes, among other things.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday  offered electronic-toll system throughout the country, though he rejected the demand for scrapping of toll system.

Gadkari  held a  meeting with AIMTC delegation and appealed them to call off the strike assuring an electronic toll collection system by December.
