Rajiv Gandhi remembered on 23rd death anniversary

New Delhi, May 21 (IBNS): India paid tribute to late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 23rd anniversary of martyrdom.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi were among others to play homage to the leader at Vir Bhoomi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Narendra Modi, who is all set to take oath as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, tweeted: "My homage to former PM Shri Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary."

Rajiv Gandhi, the sixth Prime Minister of India, was killed at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, India on May 21, 1991. At least 14 others were also killed.

His assassination was carried out by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, also known as Dhanu, who was found after investigations to be a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber.
