United BJP fronts Modi as leader

India Blooms News Service (IBNS) | | 17 May 2014, 02:07 pm
New Delhi, May 17 (IBNS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday unanimously renewed its pledge to be led by Narendra Modi, expressing "deep appreciation for the inspiring and visionary" leadership of the Prime Minister-elect.
Following a meeting of the BJP's Parliamentary Board at the party's headquarters in central Delhi, the right wing party, not unknown to internal fractions, presented an united front and pitched Modi as its leader.

The board hailed the BJP's victory in the national elections whose results were declared on Friday and said the fact that a non-Congress party had received a clear majority gives it an "overwhelming mandate to govern the country".

Reading out a declaration of the board meeting, that was attened by the party's top brass including L K Advani, Sushma Swaraj, ArunJaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Nitin Gadkari among others, party president Rajnath Singh commended Modi for his vision.

He said the BJP along with National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would "set the country's economy on a growth track, make it secure and provide a government that would accord to the highest standards of probity".

Singh also announced that after Modi demits office as the Gujarat Chief Minister, the BJP had provisionally given him the task of taking the top office of the west Indian state.

The brief meeting came after a two-hour victory parade on Saturday morning from the IGI Airport to BJP headquarters on Ashoka Road led by Modi.

Decimating the ruling Congress in a landslide victory, Modi led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to win 285 seats out of 543 in the national elections, making it the first party to cross the majority mark of 272 on its own in over 30 years.

Riding on an unprecedented wave of expectations coupled with widespread resentment against the ruling Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), Modi almost singled-handedly bought the BJP-led National Deocratic Alliance (NDA) to a 337-seat-tally.

Sonia and Rahul Gandhi-led Congress party meanwhile was routed to just 44 seats, a huge 162 seats short of last time, ending Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s tenure with a humiliating blow.
