Panipat, Haryana, Oct 18 (IBNS): A folk singer was shot dead on Tuesday evening by assailants, while she was on her way home after a concert at Chamrara village in Israna block of Panipat district, Haryana, reports said.

The deceased has been identified as 22-year old Harshita Dahiya, who hails from Nahra-Nahri village of Sonipat district, but was living in Delhi's Narela.

According to witnesses, the assailants, who came in a car, pumped 5-6 bullets into her before fleeing the spot.

The Indian Express quoted Panipat SP Rahul Sharma as saying that he suspects the role of a gangster named Dinesh.

"He is the brother-in-law of the female folk singer shot dead in Panipat. Earlier, she had accused him of raping her. He is also accused in her mother’s murder. Harshita was a witness in her mother’s murder case. But we are not ruling out other theories," Sharma said.

The singer reportedly told her friends that she had received death threats and had disclosed the same via her YouTube channel and on social media.

There were three other people apart from the deceased, who were reportedly dragged out of the car by the assailants before shooting Harshita.

"They did not target anybody except Harshita. As of now, there is no clarity on the exact number of the assailants. We have got some clues and we are working on them," Sharma added.

A murder case has been registered by the police.
