New Delhi/IBNS: Despite a high number of Covid cases reported, less than 2 per cent of the population has been affected so far, the government said on Tuesday.

"Despite the high number of cases reported so far, we have been able to contain the spread to under 2% of the population. We can not let our guards down, hence continued focus on containment is critical," Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said during a media briefing.

"India has witnessed a consistent upward trend in weekly tests since mid-February with average daily tests more than 2.5 times in last 14 weeks," Agarwal said.

The government said that only 1.8 per cent of the total population of India has been affected by the virus.

However, it mentioned that over 98 per cent of the population is still susceptible or vulnerable to contract the virus.

Meanwhile, the government noted that India has recorded daily recoveries of more than 4 lakh Covid patients in a single day for the first time.

4,22,436 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours.

Average Daily Recovery of more than 3,55,944 cases has been recorded in the last 14 days, said the Centre.

Eight states have more than 1 lakh active cases and 22 states have more than 15 per cent case positivity, the Centre said.

States and UTs like Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Delhi have shown a decline in the cases and positivity.
