COVID-19 cases on the rise, situation ‘not good’, says Meghalaya government
Shillong/UNI: With a spurt in COVID-19 cases, the Meghalaya government on Saturday described the prevailing health situation in the state as "not good", and as it appealed to people to remain alert and stay safe.
Thirteen more persons, including four Border Security Force (BSF) troopers, tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday morning, taking the active cases up to 365 in the State.
"The prevailing health situation is not good as of now. The citizens of the State must be cautious and take serious preventive measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19," Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said.
"People must avoid coming or going out unnecessarily at this time, especially to crowded places. If one person is tested positive, it means the whole family and many others will be affected, and it is not easy, because a long contact tracing has to be done," he said.
We have to fight together through behaviour change, and we will also impart training on how to prevent the spread. The first and foremost goal is to understand how to take care and how to treat infected persons," the senior medical official underscored.
He informed that all government employees of various departments will be trained on the need to adapt to the new normal through behaviour change as “we have to live with this virus”.
"We cannot continue to live in fear but we have to learn to live without fear and without stigmatizing anybody," Dr. War underscored, even as he anticipated that more COVID-19 positive cases would come up in the state.
He said that infected persons would have mental stress and trauma which may remain for years and all the citizens must know how to fight back and defeat this virus.
"We have to learn to live with this virus and tackle it," Dr War iterated.
“New positive cases detected till 0900 hours on Saturday morning was 13, including 3 BSF troopers and three others in East Khasi Hills, one BSF and two others in West Garo Hills, three persons in Ri-Bhoi and one person in South Garo Hills,” a health official said
.
East Khasi Hills District has the highest active cases at 313, which includes 239 BSF personnel, 14 from other armed forces besides 60 civilians.
Ri-Bhoi district has 34 active cases, 11 in West Garo Hills, two each in East Jaintia Hills and South Garo Hills, and one each in East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills.
Till date, there have been two COVID-19 deaths in the state, while 49 have recovered from the disease.
