New Delhi/IBNS: Adding almost 10,000 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, India, the country of 1.3 billion people, on Thursday witnessed the biggest jump in the number of infections.

With the report of 9,996 new cases, the Covid tally in India has now touched 2,86,579 including 1,41,029 cured and 8,102 deaths.

For the first time on Wednesday since the outbreak of Covid in India in late January, the recovered cases surpassed the active ones which are 1,37,448 on Thursday.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, has reported 94,041 cases including 3,438 deaths.

India on Jun 8 entered into the second phase of Unlock 1 where restaurants, malls, religious places are allowed to reopen.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Mar 24 announced a nationwide lockdown, which was later extended four times, to stem the spread of the contagion.

Even when the country is witnessing the reopening of major socio-economic aspects of life, the lockdown is still active in containment zones (where Covid cases are reported).
