New Delhi/IBNS: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday said COVID-19 cases in India would have touched 8.2 lakh if the country had not implemented either containment or nationwide lockdown, and the pre-emptive and proactive measures have restricted the cases to 7,447 cases on Apr 11.

“Lockdown and containment measures are important to fight Covid-19. If we had not taken any measures then we might have had 2 lakh cases at this time. India’s response to COVID19 has been proactive. We have followed a graded approach," Lav Agrawal, Joint Secretary with the Health Ministry, said while addressing a press conference.

The Health Ministry said it reached the figures based on a study on statistical understanding, not the ICMR Delhi study.

Without measures the growth in cases would have spiked 42 per cent while in the post-lockdown situation the rate is down to 29 per cent.

The ministry said the Centre is working with the sates to ensure adequate supply of PPE (personal protective equipment), N95 masks, testing kits and ventilators.

Dedicated COVID-19 hospitals are added to address the emerging cases and contain the spread of the illness, it added.
