Punjab Health Minister announces cancer treatment package for minors

Chandigarh, Sep 16 (IBNS): In a major boost towards cancer treatment in Punjab, the state Health Minister has announced a package for all minors suffering from the disease, reports said.

Minister Brahm Mohindra said, "The government is committed to providing tertiary health services to each and every child of the state suffering from cancer. We have commenced the first-of-its-kind special awareness programme to ensure health security."

Under the scheme, minor cancer patients will receive a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh for treatment.

"We have already implemented the plan to strengthen facilities at government medical colleges in Patiala and Amritsar and other cancer hospitals to provide quality tertiary health services to the affected children," he said.

According to the Minister, every year, around 50,000 new cases of cancer are detected among minors in India.

Cancer mortality rate is also high in India.
