Indian lab applies for patent for the first Zika virus vaccine
Hyderabad, Feb 3 (IBNS): As the race to find a vaccine for the Zika virus hots up, Bharat Biotech International Limited of Hyderabad, India, claims it has made a breakthrough and has filed for the patent for the world's first Zika virus vaccine, according to media reports on Wednesday.
The World Health Organisation has declared Zika and its suspected link to birth defects a global health emergency.
On Tuesday,Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, had announce that it has launched a vaccine research and development project targeting the prevention of Zika virus infection and disease.
Sanofi Pasteur leads the vaccine field for viruses in the same family as Zika virus (ZIKV), with licensed vaccines against Yellow Fever, Japanese Encephalitis and, most recently, Dengue.
