Kali Puja
While rest of India soaks in the spirit of Diwali, the festival of lights, in West Bengal it is the worship of Maa Kali, the fearsome form of mother goddess Durga, that is more special. According to Hindu mythology, an enraged Kali was on a killing spree and to stop her Lord Shiva, her husband, lay before her and as she stepped over him she stuck her tongue out in shame and stopped the carnage. In West Bengal and its capital Kolkata, a city famous for the Kalighat temple of the goddess, the diety is worshipped much like Durga Puja in the ornate marquees (pandals) by the community puja organisers. Two days of revelry marks the occasion and the city is illuminated with innovative lighting. People also queue up to see the images and the pandals.
