Sonia Gandhi mourns the demise of Mahasweta Devi
New Delhi, July 28 (IBNS): Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Thursday mourned the demise of activist and litterateur Mahasweta Devi, who passed away at the age of 90.
"Smt Sonia Gandhi has deeply mourned the passing away of outstanding writer & progressive grassroots intellectual, Mahasweta Devi," a tweet on the official account of INC read.
"Remembering her as a writer who addressed the issues and conscience of the subaltern, the middle class and women, Smt Gandhi said that through her writings, Mahasweta Devi incessantly fought injustice, oppression, inequality & bias. She loved & celebrated Indian Tribal life. She was brutally honest and her words echoed her inner voice, representing voiceless and faceless countrymen," it said.
"Smt. Gandhi extended her condolences to millions of her readers and admirers. Describing the loss Smt. Gandhi said, India has lost a conscience keeper & one of the greatest Indian women writers of our times. We stand in this hour of grief with her family & everyone who loved her," it added.
Mahasweta Devi was born in 1926 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Her father, Manish Ghatak, was a well-known poet and novelist of the 'Kallol' movement, who used the pseudonym Jubanashwa.
She is known for writings like 'Hajar Churashir Maa', 'Aranyer Adhikar ', among others.
She had won numerous awards in her career including Jnanpith Award and Sahitya Akademi Award.
