U-14, 16 Tennis: Moksha topples Kanishka

India Blooms News Service

Pune, Oct 3 (IBNS) Unseeded Maharashtra-lass Moksha Thukral and Sai Dedeepya of Andhra Pradesh showed the top two seeds of girls Under-16 section the door in the All India (Under-14 and 16) Ranking Retail Concepts Championship Series Tennis Tournament 2012, organised by City Blog and Om Dalvi Memorial Trust, at Deccan Gymkhana on Wednesday.

The day overall saw three more giant killing performances in the Under-14 section with Vatsal Gandhi and Bharat Kumaran (boys) walking tall apart from Vaibhavi Deshmukh in the girls segment.

In the first quarter-final of the girls Under-16 section, Moksha defeated local girl and top seed Kanishka Chawla in a three-set battle. After two rounds of best of 17 games’ matches, all the sections shifted to best of three tie-break set matches in the quarter-final rounds. The three-set format will continue in the semi-finals and finals.

Moksha won a tight first set 7-5, before left-handed Kanishka showed her ability by winning the second 6-3. Moksha, however, showed that her winning the first set was no fluke, clinching the decider 6-4 to make it to the semis.

Andhra’s unseeded Sai came back from being a set down to knock out Maharashtra’s second seed Sharlee Deshmukh 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

The boys Under-14 section witnessed two topsy-turvy results with unseeded Vatsal Gandhi of Gujarat and qualifier Bharat Kumaran continuing their dream run and make it to the last four at the expense of seeded players.

Vatsal made short work of Delhi’s seventh seed Ansuman Gulia 6-3, 6-2. Bharath came up with an even dominant performance, as he thrashed Andhra’s fifth seed Abhimanu Vannemreddy, losing just two games in the process.

In the girls U-14 section, Maharashtra’s unseeded Vaibhavi Deshmukh registered her second upset in as many days defeating seventh seed Harsha Sai Challa of Andhra Pradesh 6-3, 6-1.

In the boys Under-16 section, three of the top four seeds made it to the last four, as fifth seed Rahul Yadav of MP accounted for state-mate and third seed Yash Yadav 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Unseeded Vatsal Gandhi threatened to make his second upset of the day, before top seed and local lad Aditya Gokhale found his top form to win 6-1, 5-7, 6-4 in this section.
