ASEAN meets to expand global ties

India Blooms News Service

Phnom Penh, Nov 20 (IBNS): The first-ever ASEAN global dialogue was held in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, on Tuesday, as the southeast Asian bloc sought to expand trade and investment ties with the rest of the world.

The convention, held right after the 21st ASEAN Summit, was attended by the leaders of nations and financial organisations liked the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organisation, the Asian Development Bank, and the UN Conference on Trade and Development.

The event also saw front row involvement by the U.S. with President Barack Obama joining Asian leaders to outline a US-ASEAN Expanded Economic Engagement, aimed at paving the way for Asian nations to link up with Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Obama met Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh briefly on the sidelines of the 7th East Asia Summit (EAS) here on Tuesday.

Obama told Singh: "India is a big part of my plan."

Singh on the same day held bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Prime Minister of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei on the sidelines of the East Asian Summit.

Singh and Noda reportedly reviewed the bilateral relationship between the two countries and discussed other regional issues.

Meanwhile, Singh and Bolkiah discussed the possibility of expanding cooperation in the energy sector.

Singh on Sunday arrived at Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia, for the 10th India-ASEAN Summit and the 7th East Asia Summit.
