Gay roomie: Indian-American charged

New Jersey, Feb 9 (IBNS): An Indo-American student has been charged with a hate crime against his gay roommate who committed suicide in 2010 after the former allegedly spied his intimacy with another male through a webcam.
Nineteen-year-old Dharun Ravi, a former student of Rutgers University, was charged with secretly using a webcam to shoot his gay roommate Tyler Clementi kissing another male in his room in Sept 2010.
Clementi came to know about the matter and informed it to the college authorities.
Clementi committed suicide days later, media reports said.
He had jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge on Sept 22, 2010.
Clementi, reports said quoting authorities, was in an intimate embrace with another man at the time the camera was on.
Meanwhile, Dharun has been charged with invasion of privacy, hindering prosecution and bias intimidation in the case that ignited a media firestorm and outrage against anti-homosexuals.
According to reports, the American authorities are likely upgrade one charge against Dharun.
Jury selection for Dharun’s trial is scheduled to commence from Feb 21 onwards.
