New Delhi, July 21 (IBNS) Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said the response of the railway relief team to the train accident on Monday in West Bengal was delayed.
Amid stinging criticism by opposition of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee for neglecting her ministry, Chidambaram added fuel to the fire saying: “I was informed that the first relief team could reach only two and half hours late. The second one seven hours after the accident.”
“They had to drive 220 kms,” he said of the relief trains that reached the accident spot at Sainthia in Birbhum district on Monay after the rail crash that killed 66 people and injured 83 officially.
“… there is a clear gap in the mobility of the disaster team,” Chidambaram said.
The latest train accident occurred around 2 am on Monday when two trains- Uttar Banga Express and Vananchal Express- collided as they came on the same track at Sainthia station, about 200 km north of Kolkata.
Down Uttar Banga Express bound for Kolkata plowed into Down Vananchal Express bound for Ranchi, as a car of the latter flew in the air and hit the railway over pass.
