Union government ordinance may postpone NEET by a year
New Delhi, May 20 (IBNS) The confusion over holding of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) continues with the Union cabinet issuing an ordinance on Friday to postpone the holding of the exam by a year, according to media reports.
The government is awaiting the President's approval for the ordinance.
In April, the Supreme Court had ruled that students seeking admission in medical and dental colleges in India have to sit for only one entrance examination, NEET.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the SC against the promulgation of the ordinance.
Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, has written to PM Modi not to bring in the ordinance. He tweeted, "I sincerely urge Modi ji not to bring any ordinance to overturn SC order on NEET."
But a few other states were in favour of postponing the NEET citing students were not prepared for the NEET as the main reason.
According to media reports, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that the government does not differ from the SC's views but is consulting over the implementation procedures.
Six lakh students appeared for the first phase of NEET on May 1, media reported. The second phase is on July 24.
