Donald Trump congratulates PM Modi, hails 'historic victory' as BJP stuns West Bengal

US President Donald Trump has congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on what the White House described as a “historic and decisive election victory” in West Bengal, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly secured a landmark win.

According to White House spokesperson Kush Desai, Trump praised Modi during a recent phone call and reiterated his admiration for the Indian leader.

“The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory,” he told IANS.

The outcome marks the first time the BJP has come to power in West Bengal, ending what reports describe as a 15-year rule of the Mamata Banerjee–led Trinamool Congress. The state has long been considered one of India’s most politically entrenched opposition strongholds.

BJP’s big breakthrough in Bengal

The result is being seen as a major political turning point in Indian politics, strengthening Prime Minister Modi’s position midway through his third term.

Addressing supporters in New Delhi, Modi said a “new chapter” had been written in Bengal’s political history and credited voters for backing what he called a mandate for “good governance.”

International media outlets, including The Washington Post and BBC, have described West Bengal as one of the toughest political battlegrounds in India, making the BJP’s reported victory especially significant.

Analysts call it a long-term political shift

Political analysts cited by international publications say the result reflects a mix of anti-incumbency sentiment and sustained organisational work by the BJP over several years.

Some experts also pointed to voter consolidation dynamics and the influence of Modi’s national appeal in shaping the outcome.

Reports in The Guardian noted that the campaign was the result of a long-term strategy by the BJP leadership, while The New York Times described the development as a significant shift in a state historically dominated by regional and left-leaning politics.

With this outcome, West Bengal’s political landscape appears to have undergone one of its most dramatic realignments in decades, reshaping both state and national equations.
