Kerala HC bans high decibel fireworks at night

Kochi, Apr 12 (IBNS): Two days after 110 people were killed in a fire tragedy in a temple at Kerala's Kollam district, the state's High Court on Tuesday ordered a prohibition on exploding high decibel firecrackers during nighttime.
According to the court, the bursting of crackers should not exceed the decibel levels of 125-145 even during the day.

Earlier in the day, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy called  an all-party meeting to discuss a ban on fireworks in temples.

The meeting was called in the wake of the tragedy at Puttingal Devi shrine in which 110 devotees were killed on April 10.

"We will convey the decision on proposed ban after the all-party meeting," the Chief Minister said.

On April 11, a Kerala High Court Judge suggested that use of high decibel fire crackers must be banned at all temples in the state.

In a letter to the Registrar General of the High Court, Justice V Chitambaresh had said, "The time is more than ripe for immediate judicial intervention to stop such man-made tragedies by banning the use of high decibel explosive fire crackers."
