Two more Hong Kong varsities remove Tiananmen monuments
Hong Kong/UNI: Two Hong universities on Friday removed monuments commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, days after the University of Hong Kong removed a 24-year-old sculpture marking victims of the crackdown.
According to BBC reports, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) tore down a 'Goddess of Democracy' statue, while Lingnan University removed a relief sculpture.
The removal of three monuments comes as China continues to crackdown on political dissent in Hong Kong.
The CUHK, however, has not confirmed the incident but said an "unauthorised statue" has been removed.
"The University never authorised the display of the statue on its campus, and no organisation has claimed responsibility for its maintenance and management," the university said on Friday.
Meanwhile, Lingnan University said it had recently "reviewed and assessed items on campus that may pose legal and safety risks" and "removed .... in the best interest of the University".
The University of Hong Kong Kong had taken down its 26 ft copper 'Pillar of Shame' statue on Wednesday night, after the university officials fenced off the area with plastic sheeting.
The statue showed piled-up corpses to commemorate the pro-democracy protesters killed in 1989 by Chinese authorities.
Hundreds of students were killed the Chinese troops in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989.
Till 2019, public commemoration of Tiananmen massacre used to be allowed. However, in 2020, the authorities banned the vigil for the first time in 30 years.
