Bomb hurled at ex-Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan's ancestral home hours after appearance with Sheikh Hasina

The attack took place around 8.45 pm local time at Shakib's ancestral residence in the Keshabmor area of Magura town.

According to reports, the house was also vandalised. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Attack follows Hasina's virtual address

The incident came shortly after Sheikh Hasina addressed a virtual press conference organised by the Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) in New Delhi.

During her address, the former Bangladesh prime minister vowed to return to Bangladesh in December despite the risks, saying she was prepared to face arrest or even death in what she described as an effort to restore democracy.

"My return is not about power, it's about putting Bangladesh back on track of development, secularism and prosperity," Hasina said.

"I know they may put me in jail or kill me... I will go back home to be with my people. I have decided to go and I will go to Bangladesh," she added.

Hasina living in India since 2024

Hasina has been living in India since August 5, 2024, after leaving Dhaka following the collapse of her government amid months of anti-government protests.

Last November, a special tribunal in Dhaka sentenced her to death in absentia over alleged crimes against humanity linked to her government's crackdown on the 2024 student-led protests.

Bangladesh has since repeatedly sought her extradition from India.

Appeal to international community

In her address, Hasina alleged that fear now grips Bangladesh, claiming that homes, workplaces and educational institutions were under pressure following the political upheaval.

"Fear has entered homes, workplaces and educational campuses; this is not the Bangladesh we built. I call upon the international community to stand with the people of Bangladesh in their struggle for democracy and justice," she said.

Authorities have not yet confirmed who was behind the attack on Shakib Al Hasan's ancestral home or whether it was directly linked to his participation in the virtual event with Hasina.
