Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada makes first public appearance, negates death claims
Taliban supreme leader Haibatullah Akhundzada recently addressed his supporters in Afghanistan's Kandahar city, negating all headlines about his death, media reports said on Sunday.
This was his first public appearance since taking control of the group in 2016.
Akhundzada has been the spiritual chief of the movement since 2016 but has remained a reclusive figure, even after his group seized power in Afghanistan in August, reports AFP.
On Saturday, he visited the Darul Uloom Hakimah madressah to “speak to his brave soldiers and disciples”, according to Taliban officials, reported the French news agency.
No photography or video of the event have emerged so far.
On Taliban social media, a 10-minute audio has been uploaded.
In it, Akhundzada — referred to as “Amirul Momineen”, or commander of the faithful — gives a religious message, reports AFP.
