Nepal Politics: KP Oli, Dahal strike fresh deal to prevent split in NCP
Kathmandu/UNI: The ruling Nepal Communist Party on Sunday managed to avoid the danger of split as party chairs KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal were close to inking a mutually beneficial agreement, thanks to the efforts of President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
As per the report by Kathmandu Post, the latest agreement means that Mr Dahal, for now, has dropped the demand for Oli's resignation, which had brought the ruling party on the brink of a split, just a few days ago.
Demands for Oli's resignation had grown strong as Dahal, backed by senior leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhala Nath Khanal, had been asking Mr Oli to step down, as both party chair and Prime Minister. Thirty out of 44 Standing Committee members had also demanded Oli's resignation.
In response to this, Oli prorogued the Parliament on July 2 and two days later, accused the Dahal-Nepal faction of plotting to oust him and impeach the President.
Since then, both Oli and Dahal had been in talks to find a way out.
The Nepal Communist Party was created out of a merger between Oli's CPN-UML and Dahal's Maoist Centre in May, 2018.
The two leaders had agreed that the party's general convention would be held within two years.
In November 2019, Mr Oli and Mr Dahal had reached a deal that the former would remain the Prime Minister for the full five-year term and the latter would be the executive chairman of the party.
