Maldives former president Nasheed, who escaped assassination bid, recovering in Germany
Mohammed Nasheed, Maldives' former president and current speaker of parliament, who escaped an assassination attempt last month, hasn’t yet recovered fully. For the last few weeks he has been in Germany, having treatment for his injuries.
He has revealed that he is feeling better overall, however, there is a lingering numbness to the left side of his body throughout the recovery process. There are some issues in his left eardrum which got damaged as the result of the IED blast.
Nasheed, the archipelago’s first democratically elected leader, was targeted with an assassination attempt on May 6, when a remote-controlled IED exploded near his home in Male. He sought initial treatment in the Maldives and flew to Germany after a couple of weeks.
On Sunday, he cited doctors having revealed that his internal organs are observed to be recovering well and look good. However, he noted that there still are issues with his fingers, ear, and leg.
He also assured people that he would return to the country soon to resume his public life
Soon after the attack, Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammad Solih had ordered an overhaul of security and intelligence services. Over four dozen suspects have been arrested so far by police in the case.
The country’s Parliament Committee on National Security, too, has initiated its own inquiry into the breach of Nasheed’s security and has even questioned senior ministers of the government.
