Bangladesh: 30 BMP members sent to jail in Hasina train attack case of 1994

Dhaka, June 30 (IBNS): A Bangladeshi court has sent to jail 30 BNP members charged with conducting an armed attack on a train carrying Awami League president and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina 25 years ago after withdrawing their bail, local media reported.

The court passed the order after hearing witness testomonies on Sunday. It also also issued arrest warrants against the key accused in the case, Zakaria Pintu, general secretary of BNP's Ishwardy Municipality Wing, Moklesur Rahman Bablu, former mayor of Ishwardy Municipality, and Humayun Kabir, who were all absent from the hearing, bdnews24.com said.

Additional public prosecutor Advocate Obaidul Hoque said the court will hear the arguments in the case on Monday and Tuesday before passing a verdict.

When Hasina was the Opposition leader in 1994, she was conducting a nationwide campaign by train when her compartment came under attack at Ishwardy in Pabna on September 23, 1994.

The attack had taken place when BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's was Prime Minister.
