National workshop on cleaning up 100 iconic places in India
New Delhi, Jul 8 (IBNS):The two-day National Workshop on Special Cleanliness of 100 Iconic places of India was inaugurated on Friday in New Delhi. Experts from the World Bank, officials from the concerned municipalities and state governments are attending the workshop.
Union Minister for Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Narendra Singh Tomar and the Secretary, Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Parameswaran Iyer were present at the inauguration.
It is part of the Swachh Bharat Mission, media reported.
In June, the central government had declared that clean-up programmes are be launched in 100 iconic places in India, which are often in the news for being unhygienic and filthy, according to media reports.
To start with, 10 places would be taken up in the first phase - the Taj Mahal in Agra, Jagannath temple in Puri, the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, Tirupati temple, Golden Temple in Amritsar, Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi, Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan, Meenakshi temple in Madurai and the Kamakhya temple in Assam.
PSUs such as Nalco and Hindustan Zinc have agreed to support the work in the Jagannath temple and Ajmer Sharif Dargah, respectively, the media reported.
