New Delhi/IBNS: The airfares between India and UK have shot up as high as Rs 3.95 lakh with Britain moving India from red to amber list and more students wanting to travel to that country for academic reasons, according to media reports.

A government official on Saturday said the sudden steep surge in airfares has been communicated to the ministry of civil aviation, a Hindustan Times report said.

The UK government's decision to shift India from red list to amber list means that fully vaccinated travellers from India will no longer have to go under mandatory 10-day hotel quarantine.

"The UAE, Qatar, India and Bahrain will be moved from the red list to the amber list. All changes come into effect Sun 8th August at 4 am," UK transport secretary Grant Shapps announced on Twitter.

The price of a British Airways flight ticket for one way travel from Delhi to London on August 26 is Rs 3.95 lakh, according to Google Travel.

Air India and Air Vistara fare between the two cities range from Rs1.2 lakh to Rs 2.3 lakh.

Sanjeev Gupta, secretary at the ministry of home affairs, said he has shared the screenshots of the minimum airfares between Delhi to London for the economy class with the ministry.

“Fare of Rs 3.95 lakh one way Delhi to London on Aug 26. No, it's not 1st class. It's economy on @British_Airways @airindiain @airvistara etc. also 1.2 to 2.3 lakh. College admission time! See minimum fare on @GoogleTravel in August. Have alerted Secretary @MoCA_GoI @JM_Scindia,” tweeted Gupta.

Responding to Gupta's tweet Air India said it is trying to find the “source of these fares” and added that the current fares available on their official website for Delhi to London is approximately Rs 1.15 lakh.
