Melbourne, Jan 21 (IBNS): Cruising to the next round of the Australian Open, US Tennis icon Serena Williams on Monday defeated top seed Simona Halep in a high-quality last-16 match on Monday.

Serena proved once again with this victory that she is one of the key persons who may lift the title this year.

Australian Open is significant as it is the first major grand slam of the year.

Serena defeated Halep  6-1 4-6 6-4.

The defeat ended Halep's dream of winning the Australian Open title this year.

Serena is looking for her Grand Slam title since coming back from pregnancy last year.
