India’s hockey eves create history! Thrash South Africa 6-1 in World Cup clash

India desperately needed a victory after being held to a 2-2 draw by China in their opening match.

Led by captain Salima Tete, India put on a commanding performance, dominating the middle quarters and effectively sealing the contest well before the final whistle.

South Africa had an early opportunity when Caylin Maree broke through one-on-one, but she failed to capitalise on the chance.

India quickly punished their opponents, with Sunelita Toppo opening the scoring in the 11th minute.

India increased the pressure in the second quarter, with Navneet Kaur doubling the lead before Sushila Chanu made it 3-0 with another well-taken goal.

By half-time, India had established a commanding advantage, leaving South Africa with a difficult task to mount a comeback.

India's pace, quick passing and attacking intensity made it increasingly difficult for the South African defence to settle into the game.

The Indian side continued its dominance in the third quarter, with Deepika scoring to extend the lead to 4-0.

Lalremsiami then found the net in the 44th minute before Sakshi Rana's powerful strike made it 6-0, effectively ending any hopes of a South African recovery.

India showcased a wide range of attacking skills throughout the match, with six different players getting on the scoresheet.

South Africa managed to score a consolation goal through Kayla de Waal, reducing the deficit to 6-1.

The five-goal victory gave India their biggest-ever win in Women’s Hockey World Cup history.

India now have four points from two matches and are in a strong position to advance to the next stage.

The Indian eves will face England in their final Pool D match. England enter the contest after suffering a 4-2 defeat to China.
