India hold England to 0-0 draw, storm into next round of women’s World Cup

India advanced to the next round of the Women’s World Cup after securing a crucial 0-0 draw against England on Thursday, a result that was enough to seal their progression.

The Indian defence stood firm against sustained English pressure, with England dominating possession and creating several opportunities. However, the British side failed to convert their penalty corners, allowing India to hold on for a valuable point.

With the draw, India finished second in Pool D with five points, behind China, who topped the group with seven points.

England earned 11 penalty corners but failed to convert a single one, with Indian goalkeepers Savita and Bichu producing a series of impressive saves to deny the hosts.

India, meanwhile, earned six penalty corners and made 13 circle entries but could not capitalise on their opportunities. Their passing and attacking execution will remain areas of concern heading into the next round.

The Indian defence was tested repeatedly, with England making 28 circle entries and putting the Indian backline under considerable pressure.

India will now face two of the world’s hockey powerhouses — the Netherlands and Australia — in the next round, while carrying one point forward.

India will take on the Netherlands on Friday before facing Australia in their next encounter.

In the other Pool D match, China thrashed South Africa 5-1 to finish top of the group. India had earlier defeated South Africa 6-1 in their previous outing.
