Sunrisers Hyderabad names Kane Williamson as skipper for IPL 2018
Hyderabad, Mar 29 (IBNS): Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday announced that New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson will serve as their captain for the upcoming season after tainted Australian batsman David Warner was disallowed to take part in the 2018 edition of the tournament by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the parent governing body of the sport in the nation.
Warner's agreement was terminated by the Hyderabad based franchise after the Cricket Australia concluded its investigation on the sandpapergate and imposed a 12-month ban from international cricket on him.
In a statement, K Shanmugam, CEO, Sunrisers Hyderabad, said: "We are happy to announce Kane Williamson as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad for IPL 2018."
Kane Williamson also said that he is looking forward to take up the challenge ahead.
Warner stepped down as the captain of the team on Wednesday.
Earlier today, Warner tendered an apology for his involvement in the saga, which took place in South Africa's Cape Town, during the third Test match of the series.
"To cricket fans in Australia and all over the world: I am currently on my way back to Sydney. Mistakes have been made which have damaged cricket," the explosive Aussie opener said.
"I apologise for my part and take responsibility for it. I understand the distress this has caused the sport and it fans.
"It's a stain on the game we all love and I have loved since I was a boy," Warner said.
He said that he will now spend time with his family and friends.
"You will hear from me in a few days," he said.
