Sumit and Debabrata bag the Shree Cement Pair Tile in the 61st Winter National Bridge Meet

Kolkata/IBNS: Asian Games Bronze Medalists Sumit Mukherjee and Debabrata Mazumder from Railways lived up to the expectation and emerged champions at the Shree Cement Pairs event in the Gold Section collecting 436.4 Match Points (MPs) on the penultimate day of the 61st Winter National Bridge Championship at Netaji Indoor Stadium here Saturday.

This was their second winning of the title, the earlier being at the Nationals  held at Ahmedabad during 2015. They will receive a purse of rupees twenty five thousand, which is winners’ stake   and handsome trophies.

Sumit and Debabrata, who as part of Railways ‘A’ team which finished  4th in the team event for Ruoa Gold Cup in this meet, earlier  were at the 4th place after two elimination rounds yesterday. But this morning they  began promisingly and moved up as the match progressed. Saturday’s victory would definitely bring them back into the limelight again.

Commenting on their performance today, Sumit, a veteran of many international battles, said, "We played well from the beginning today. I am quite satisfied  with our performnace  as the field  was quite tough.  We combined well to maintain  our lead." They would be next playing  for India in  an international tournament at Montecarlo during February next.

Asian Games Gold Medalists Shibnath Dey Sarkar  and Pranab Bardhan, who lost in the  team event quarter final for the Ruia Gold Cup, could not rise to the occasion this time as well since   they finished fifth today with 399.3 MPs. Ms. Kiran Nadar and B Satyanarayan who were members of  the team that won the Ruia Gold Cup in team event, could not repeat their feat and ended  10th here with  364.5 MPs

Sumit and Debabrata were followed by the duo  Animesh Raj and Swapan Desai from Maharashtra who  finished second with 407 MPs. Other results ( up to eighth position) in this event are : 3. Kaustabh Nandi & Kaustabh Bendre 404.8 MPs, 4.  K R Venkatraman & Swarnendu Banerjee, 5. Shibnath De Sarkar & Pranab Bardhan 399.3 MPs, 6. Kalpana Mishra & Anil Padhye 394.2 MPs, 7.Keyzad Anklesaria & Rajeswar Tewari  380.5 MPs, 8. Ajoy Bagaria & Alok Sadhu  378.8 MPs.

In the Silver group of Shree Cement Pair event, meant for the lesser ranked players  Santanu Chakraborty & Tanmoy Mazumdar  finised at the top with 407.1 MPs and are folowed by A B Chakraborty & A B Bajoria (402.5),  A K sinha & Nikita Kamal ( 390.6), Amitava Banerjee & Nikita Kamal (388.1), Mini Naidu & Priya Sinha (383.9), Pronab Roy & Hasibul Hasan (379.3),  Pritam Das & Souvik Kar (378.1) and  Ramkrishna Mazumdar & Indranil Chakraboty ( 378) .

The mixed pair event of  the tournament would be held  on Sunday-the concluding day.
