Melbourne, Jan 20 (IBNS): World number one Simona Halep survived a scare and an epic battle as she defeated unseeded American Lauren Davis to reach the fourth round of the ongoing Australian Open here on Saturday.

She defeated her American opponent by 4-6 6-4 15-13.

The epic battle continued for  three hours and 45 minutes.

The final set, where both the players gave their best shots, lasted for 142 minutes.

Halep finally served out the match at the fourth attempt to move to the next round of the tournament.

“Was very tough match. So long. I never played a third set so long,’’ she was quoted as saying by the tournament website.

“So I’m really happy that I could stay and win it. I’m almost dead," she said.

“I have no idea how much I run, I just know that my muscles are gone. My ankle… I can’t feel it any more. But it was nice to win and to again be in the fourth round of this tournament is great," the number one player said.
