Shreyas Iyer's successful Test debut helps India post 258/4 at stumps on day 1 in Kanpur

Kanpur/IBNS: Shreyas Iyer stopped at 25 short of his debut Test hundred when umpires called off the first day's play with India's scorecard reading 258/4 in the inaugural match against New Zealand here on Thursday.

Iyer, who received his India cap from legend Sunil Gavaskar in the morning, survived 136 balls slamming nine of them for boundaries and over boundaries.

He was aptly supported by allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who helped to steady the innings which was under pressure at 145/4 following the dismissal of skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who scored 35 off 63 balls.

Jadeja is unbeaten at 50 off 100 balls at stumps.

Not just Rahane, Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara were the two other batsmen who missed the opportunities to credit themselves with big scores, falling in the trap of the Kiwi bowlers.

While Gill was bowled out by Kyle Jamieson for 52 post lunch, Pujara left the pregnant innings of 26 on field being deceived by experienced pace bowler Tim Southee on a pitch India are playing three spinners.

Though Jamieson glittered on the first day picking three wickets for 47, he along with his colleagues were defeated by the 113-run fifth wicket partnership of Iyer and Jadeja, which kept India ahead of the visitors on the first day.
