Ravi Shastri appointed as new coach of Team India?

New Delhi, July 11 (IBNS): Former Indian cricketer Ravi Shastri has been named as the coach of the Indian cricket team, as per media reports.

He replaces Anil Kumble.

Kumble resigned from the post after the Champions Trophy in England last month.

India were defeated in the final of the tournament by arch-rival Pakistan.

Kumble did not travel with the team to West Indies and resigned from the post.

He resigned from the post amid rumours regarding his rift with Indian captain Virat Kohli.

While the Cricket Advisory Committee had endorsed an extension to his tenure as head coach, Kumble decided not to continue.

Issuing a statement on Twitter, Kumble had said: "I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the Captain had reservations with my 'style' and about my continuing as the Head Coach."

The former Indian coach even said he was surprised to hear from BCCI about Kohli's 'reservations', since he believes that he always maintained "respected role boundaries between Captain and Coach".

Shastri, a former Indian captain, was one of the front-runner for the post since he applied this month.

The BCCI-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), consisting of former cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, approved Shastri's name for the job.

Interestingly, Kumble was appointed as the coach over Ravi Sashtri by the Cricket Advisory Committee, last year.

Shastri will guide the team for India's tour to Sri Lanka which will begin from July 26.

Both the teams will play three test matches, five ODIs and one T20.
