Kolkata, July 28 (UNI): The Indian team will travel to Pakistan to compete in a Davis Cup tie for the first time in 55 years, All India Tennis Association (AITA) Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee confirmed today.

AITA confirmed the Indian team’s participation in the Asia/ Oceania Group 1 away tie, which will be held on September 14-15 at the Pakistan Sports Complex in Islamabad.

Mr Chatterjee said, “Yes, we will be going. It’s the World Cup of tennis and not a bilateral series, so there is no embargo on any front.”

AITA is yet to announce the final squad for the seventh meeting between the two neighbouring countries. “The team will officially be announced later, and it will be based on rankings,” said Mr Chatterjee. “But we more or less know the team.”

"The team of six players, support staff and coach will be going to Pakistan. I will also go along with the team. We will be putting in the visa application for everyone. Pakistan hockey team travelled to India for the World Cup and now we are also going," he said.

The Davis Cup draw was rolled out in February this year, but after the Pulwama attack on February 14, the future of Indian tennis team touring Pakistan looked really bleak.

The last time India played Pakistan in the Davis Cup tie was in 2006, at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
