Indian hockey star Md Shahid passes away, aged 56

Gurgaon, July 20 (IBNS): Former Indian hockey captain and legend, Mohammad Shahid passed away on Wednesday morning after suffering from prolonged liver problems.

He was 56 years old. Shahid was admitted at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, where he breathed his last.

A prolific dribbler, Shahid was also known for his sprinting skills.

He was also an Olympic Gold Medal winner, winning it in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Shahid was awarded the Arjuna Award and Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of sports.

Paying homage to the late sport-star, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Saddened to hear about the passing of great hockey player Mohd Shahid. One of India's greatest sportsmen. Condolences to his family, friends."
